Calgary Cancer Center
A purpose-built healthcare facility in Calgary, the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre relied on fully integrated Ventex exterior louvers to support controlled ventilation within a highly specialized medical environment.
Overview
The Calgary Cancer Centre is the largest healthcare infrastructure project ever delivered in Alberta, consolidating cancer treatment, research, and inpatient care into a single, purpose-built facility on the Foothills Medical Centre campus. The 1.18 million sq ft building supports inpatient units, outpatient treatment areas, radiation therapy, laboratories, and teaching spaces within a carefully coordinated architectural envelope.
The exterior presents a refined composition of terra cotta paneling and corrugated metal cladding, balancing warmth, texture, and depth across the façade. Ventex Inc. provided fully integrated exterior louvers designed to meet strict mechanical performance requirements while aligning precisely with surrounding materials, proportions, and colouration. Rather than appearing as add-on components, the louvers are embedded within both cladding systems and installed by the respective façade trades, contributing to a cohesive architectural expression that unifies performance and design intent.

Working with our Partner
Ventex collaborated closely with DIALOG, mechanical consultant Smith + Anderson, cladding contractors Flynn Canada and Thermal Systems, and PCL Construction to coordinate louver performance and façade integration across the campus-scale development.
Collaboration focused on:
Achieving required mechanical free area targets without compromising façade rhythm
Coordinating structural steel framing, attachment strategies, and fastening details
Integrating louvers directly within terra cotta and metal cladding assemblies
Providing detailed stamped shop drawings to support precise fabrication and installation
Through proactive coordination and technical validation, Ventex ensured that ventilation performance requirements were met while preserving the integrity and visual consistency of the building envelope.
"Ventex was a pleasure to work with on the Calgary Cancer Centre. Their team was professional, communicative, and highly engaged from design through execution, making them a valuable partner on such a high-profile project."

Results
Ventex exterior louvers were successfully integrated throughout the Calgary Cancer Centre, delivering reliable ventilation performance within a complex healthcare environment while maintaining a clean, unified façade aesthetic. The completed project demonstrates how technically demanding mechanical systems can be seamlessly incorporated into architecturally expressive building envelopes at institutional scale.
