Overview

The Cowichan District Hospital Replacement Project, recently named Quw’utsun Valley Hospital, is a new full-service acute care facility being built to serve communities across Vancouver Island’s Cowichan Valley. When complete, the hospital will replace an aging facility with a significantly larger, purpose-built campus designed to support modern healthcare delivery and future regional growth.

Alumavent supplied damper solutions across the entire hospital, supporting airflow control in diagnostic, treatment, inpatient, and support areas. Dampers were also provided for the on-site generator and utility buildings, including large-format applications serving emergency power and critical infrastructure systems. At the time of writing, the project is approximately 75% complete, with damper installation well advanced across the campus.

Working with our Partner

Alumavent worked closely with Ainsworth, a long-standing controls contractor partner in Western Canada, to support damper integration throughout the project. This collaboration extended across multiple hospital zones and building systems, requiring detailed coordination with mechanical contractors, engineers, and controls teams.

The project involved navigating complex technical requirements and approval processes. In several instances, Alumavent supported the engineering team by addressing design expectations that did not fully reflect real-world damper performance. Extended testing data and detailed performance calculations were provided to demonstrate compliance and support approvals, ultimately helping firm up a properly calculated design and differentiate Alumavent’s solutions from competing products.

Collaboration focused on:

  • Supplying dampers across all hospital systems, including generator and utility buildings

  • Supporting performance-based design discussions with extended testing and calculations

  • Coordinating closely with controls contractors to ensure reliable system integration

  • Responding quickly to technical questions during active construction

"Shawn and the team at Alumavent are great to work with — quick response time and available to assist with special requests. If any issue arises, they work promptly to remedy the situation. I highly recommend working with Alumavent."
Josh Olson, Construction Team Manager, Ainsworth Inc

Results

Alumavent damper solutions have been successfully supplied and integrated across the Cowichan District Hospital project, supporting dependable airflow control in a complex healthcare environment. Technical support, responsiveness, and performance validation played a key role in navigating approval processes and reinforcing confidence among engineers and contractors. The project reflects Alumavent’s strong working relationship with Ainsworth and highlights the value of proven damper performance backed by real-world testing. Once complete, the new Cowichan District Hospital will provide critical healthcare services to the region, supported by mechanical systems designed for reliability, accuracy, and long-term operation.
